Based on the operational real-time typhoon data of National Meteorological Center and other sources of observations including automatic station and satellite images, the main characteristics of typhoon activities in western North Pacific and the South China Sea in 2021, including 7 influential TC’s tracks , intensity, wind and rainfall, were analyzed and reviewed. In 2021, the total number of TC generated over western North Pacific and the South China Sea is less than dermatological mean value, the genesis region is obviously westward, while the TCs activities are concentrated. The overall intensity of TCs are weaker than normal, but several TCs experienced rapid intensification, among them IN-FA increased by 40 m/s within 24 hours, which was rare in the past 30 yr. There are 5 TCs made landfall in China, among which the averaged intensity of 4 TCs made landfall in southern part of China was obviously lower than average; while the sustained time after landing is obviously higher than average. Especially the case of In-Fa, which has witnessed the longest sustained lifespan after landfall in history, has finally brought serious disaster to China. |
