Abstract:The observation capability of the second generation geostationary meteorological satellite FY-4A in China has significantly improved, and it has high application potential in weather monitoring and prediction, especially in convective weather systems. FY-4A Advanced Geosynchronous Radiation Imager (AGRI) and Lightning Mapping Imager (LMI) data are used and the application of retrieval products in severe thunderstorm weather is analyzed. The results show that, due to the high spectral resolution of AGRI, the convective thunderstorms with strong updraft can be highlighted by the combination of multi-channel daytime convective storm RGB (red-green-blue) products, which have advantages over single-channel and multi-channel visible synthetic products; LMI products can detect more lightning than that from ground-based lightning products, which have advantages in monitoring lightning generated by newborn or weak convections; during a severe thunderstorm process in North China and Huanghuai region, the daytime convective storm RGB products can monitor the development of cloud system, and the frequency of lightning activities monitored by the satellite is in good agreement with hail activity.
