Abstract:Based on the real-time operational data from the Central Meteorological Observatory and the best track data of typhoons provided by China Meteorological Administration, a statistical analysis is conducted on the characteristics of typhoon activities over western North Pacific and the South China Sea and the tracks, intensities, gales, and precipitation of typhoons that affected China in 2019. A total of 29 typhoons were generated in western North Pacific and the South China Sea in 2019, two more than the average annual number; the typhoons were abnormally active in autumn and the number of typhoon genesis is obviously more than that in normal years; the typhoon intensities are relatively weak on the whole, while the number of super typhoons is almost equal to the perennial average; 5 typhoons landed in China, less than the average annual number; the average intensity of the 5 typhoons is lower than the perennial average, but Typhoon LEKIMA has strong intensity, and is accompanied with severe rainstorms and gales.
