Abstract:Based on the operational real-time typhoon data of National Meteorological Center and surface meteorological observation data, the main characteristics of typhoon activities in western North Pacific and the South China Sea in 2020, as well as the typhoon path, intensity, wind, and precipitation of typhoons that mainly affect China are analyzed. In 2020, there are a total of 23 typhoons generated over western North Pacific and South China Sea, 4.0 less than the mean value (27.0) in the same period of many years; 5 typhoons make landfall in China, 2.0 less than the mean value (7.0) in the same period of many years. The main characteristics of typhoon activities in 2020 are as follows. The source of typhoons is obviously westward; the total number of typhoons is relatively small and the extreme intensity is lower; for the first time since 1949, there is no typhoon in July; typhoons are active in August with a number of typhoons rapidly strengthened over offshore areas; from late August to early September, three typhoons continuously move northward and affect Northeast China, which is rare in history; the number of typhoons generated in October is relatively larger than that in the same period of many years, which affect the South China Sea or Indochina Peninsula successively.
