The western North Pacific (WNP) is the most active region of tropical cyclone (TC) genesis. Compared with summer TCs, there is relatively less research on autumn TCs. Since 2000, with the increase in the proportion of autumn landfalling super typhoons in China, which caused serious disasters to China, the research of autumn TCs has attracted more and more attention. The research progress of autumn TCs in the WNP is reviewed in the following three parts: the characteristics of autumn TC activities in the WNP, their influencing factors, and the characteristics and impacts of autumn landfalling TCs in China. An outlook for future research is also given here.
